The UCLA Department of Music has an active program in symphonic wind and brass instruments, as well as a renowned marching band.
Here is some information about our wind and band ensembles:
The UCLA Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band at the University of California, Los Angeles. Comprising both graduate and undergraduate students, its 50 members are highly skilled and versatile musicians selected by competitive audition each fall.
As a flexible and inclusive medium that honors its rich history while also fostering living composers, the wind ensemble provides an ideal laboratory for students to encounter a wide range of musical viewpoints. Innovative programming, interaction with faculty and guest artists, and vibrant outreach programs position the wind ensemble as a musical nexus, bringing together professional players and artist-teachers, composers, academics, school band directors, and audiences — with student-musicians at the core.
The UCLA Symphonic Band comprises graduate and undergraduate students from across the university in a traditional large concert band format. The ensemble rehearses Tuesdays from 3–4:50 p.m. and performs concerts in Schoenberg Hall during the winter and spring quarters. During the fall quarter, the Symphonic Band reads and rehearses a wide variety of musical selections and may perform an informal concert on campus. Graduate and undergraduate student conductors have regular opportunities to work with the Symphonic Band.
Woodwind Chamber Ensemble:
The UCLA Woodwind Chamber Ensembleis a woodwind focused chamber ensemble class that meets once weekly for coaching, and holds a formal concert at the end of each quarter. It is designed to offer practical rehearsal and performance experience for woodwind players in a chamber setting. Students are placed in small ensembles and assigned music, which they will work on throughout the term and perform in a formal concert at the end of the term. It is all-inclusive (woodwinds, brass, strings, piano, voice, percussion), although ensembles must include at least ONE woodwind instrument. Non-majors are welcome by audition only.
