Neal Stulberg

As Chair of the UCLA Department of Music, it is my pleasure to greet you and introduce you to our very special community of musicians.

Our Department focuses on performance, composition and music education.  Gifted students from throughout the world have the opportunity to learn through undergraduate and graduate degree programs that fully integrate academic and artistic excellence, and to study with critically acclaimed faculty.  Our Department ensembles, which perform on campus and beyond, include UCLA Philharmonia, Symphony, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Marching Band, Chorale, Chamber Singers, Camarades (our unconducted string ensemble), Brass Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Contempo Flux (our contemporary music ensemble) and Opera UCLA, as well as string, wind and brass chamber groups.  Graduates of our composition program are represented at the highest levels of the concert and studio worlds.  And as the only University of California campus with a Music Education concentration, UCLA produces passionate, expertly trained music teachers who bring the power and joy of music to school-aged children.

Music at UCLA is in a period of unprecedented dynamism and promise. The new Ostin Music Center, with its state-of-the-art recording studio and facilities, will be fully operational this fall. UCLA’s 2019 Centennial campaign is shining a major spotlight on the remarkable diversity and excellence of the arts at UCLA.  And the process of integrating UCLA’s three outstanding music-oriented departments -- Music, Musicology and Ethnomusicology -- into the first School of Music in the University of California system is moving forward, auguring unprecedented synergies and opportunities for our students.

We look forward to sharing our plans with you during this exciting period of growth.  Whether you are a current UCLA affiliate, music professional, parent, concertgoer, supporter or prospective student, we welcome you to our performances and other public programs, and are always eager to help you learn more about our activities.

Please feel free to contact me or our administrative staff if we can answer any of your questions.

With warm wishes,

Neal Stulberg
