Performance Ensemble Auditions

 

Theory Placement

The theory placement exam for incoming undergraduate students will take place Monday, September 21st at 10 am in SMB 1344.
Students must bring their BruinCards.

New Undergraduate Student Orientation Meeting

All incoming freshmen and transfer students are invited to the new student orientation meeting. This will be an opportunity to meet other incoming music students, faculty and staff, and learn more about policies and procedures for the year. The meeting will be held on Friday, September 25th in SMB 1325 at 1 pm.

Scholarships

Departmental scholarships are given at the beginning of each academic year. All continuing students must submit a completed Continuing Scholarship Application Form the first week of March in order to renew their departmental scholarships.

Competitions

The Music Department holds the following competitions each year:

  • The Mimi Alpert Feldman Award (graduate students only): Applications available in early fall quarter.
  • The Benno Rubinyi Piano Competition (non-graduating undergraduate students only): Applications available in early spring quarter.
  • The Walter Jurmann Voice Competition: Applications available in early spring quarter.
  • Concerto Competitions in Piano, Strings, Brass, Woodwinds, and Percussion (alternating years): Applications available in early fall and early winter quarter.
  • The Henry Mancini Award for Composition of Music for Motion Pictures and Television Films: Applications available in early spring quarter.
  • The Herbert H. Wise Award for Composition and Conducting: Applications available in early spring quarter.
  • The Stanley Wilson Award in Composition and Brass Performance: Applications available in early spring quarter.

Additionally, students may apply for the Elaine Krown Klein Fine Arts Scholarships, the Fine Arts Trust Award, and UCLA Affiliates Scholarships.

Receptions.  If not otherwise scheduled, the Green Room, 1230 Schoenberg Music Building, is available for receptions following graduate and senior recitals.  The university does not provide space for receptions following junior recitals.  Seniors only may schedule use of the Green Room through the Technical Services Office.   Contact Technical Services office, room 1309, for details.

Recital Clearance for Degree Completion.  Once students have completed their recitals, they must submit an Undergraduate Recital Completion Form with a copy of their program and their instructor’s signature (digital copies under “Forms”). Hard copies can be found in SMB 1642.

Undergraduate Recitals

Junior Recitals.  Junior Recitals should be no less than 20 minutes and no more than 25 minutes of music per performer, including breaks between numbers.  Two such recitals must be combined to present one full recital.

Senior Recitals.  Senior Recitals should contain a maximum of 50 minutes of music and be no longer than one hour including intermission and breaks between numbers.

Scheduling.  All eligible Juniors and Seniors should make their own reservations for Popper Theater, Ostin Rehearsal Room, or an ensemble room through the online reservation system.

1.     Check Popper availability at https://fm.music.ucla.edu/fmi/iwp/res/iwp_home.html (click on Class Schedule and Login as “guest”).

2.     Send your dates to your instructor and have them approved (requested dates must be approved by faculty member BEFORE making an online reservation).

3.     Make an online reservation at http://www.music.ucla.edu/classroom-and-theater-reservations?iTEMID=225

4.     Receive confirmation email from Technical Services Office.
