As the new Chair of the Department of Music, let me first express how honored I am to be taking on this role. I am so grateful to our former Chair Roger Bourland, who worked so hard over the past few months to make this transition a smooth one for me.  Prof. Bourland's guidance and commitment to this Department's vision in recent years have helped us continue to be a truly exceptional center for music.  We all owe him a debt of gratitude.

It is an exciting time for all of us.  Our students and faculty are creating music at a level most institutions dream about, thrilling audiences with performances that seem to keep topping the previous ones. Under the direction of Maestro Neal Stulberg, the UCLA Philharmonia recently made its wildly successful debut at The Walt Disney Concert Hall, one of the premiere concert venues in the country; Opera UCLA continues to amaze us all, with performances that rival those being given by professional opera companies; our composition students are creating music of a new era, not only for concert halls but for visual media as well; and our esteemed faculty continues to present their talents around the world, bringing the richness of that experience back home to the students at UCLA.

We are overjoyed to have recently announced a $10 million gift for construction of the Evelyn and Mo Ostin Music Center, which will include a state-of-the-art recording studio, performance spaces, classrooms, rehearsal spaces, offices, and even a jazz café. Mr. Ostin's incredibly generous gift will ensure the high level of training of musicians for generations to come.

It is truly a thrilling time for the UCLA Department of Music, with new opportunities at every turn.  I am honored to be your new Chair, and I'm looking forward with great enthusiasm to the years ahead. So once more, to our faculty and staff, to the larger UCLA community, and especially to our students, let me say:
