The amount of music available to us these days is staggering. I've realized that in order to get to know it, I need to choose to be open to all kinds of music--and for my entire life. I need to resist sticking only to what I knew when I was in my teens (which is normal, I'm afraid). I found that I had to flick my being-open-to-the-world-of-music switch to the ON position, and all of a sudden, I find that my life is enriched by constantly taking in all this new music.

As I look at the concert offerings for fall 2010, I am thrilled by the programming. These are all concerts I really want to attend! There is a wow factor in every one. The department’s fall concert schedule should be up on the website within the next few days, and we will have printed brochures soon after the quarter starts.

If you haven’t yet checked out the new look of all the HASOM websites, go to http://www.schoolofmusic.ucla.edu/ and look through it.  From the “Home” button you can access the websites for all three departments in the school, and you can check out all the events by clicking dates on the calendar or clicking the “Events” link on each page.  The School’s home site will show you all the events for all the departments.

If you haven't done so already, flick your new music switch ON and come hear what everyone is raving about. There is a world of music out there; let us be part of that world for you.

Speaking of which, I'd like to congratulate the Department of Ethnomusicology in their 50th year celebration.

I look forward to seeing you at our concerts.
