Professor Juliana Gondek to perform at Music Teacher’s Association in July

June 17th, 2010 · No Comments

We have just heard from Music Department Professor Juliana Gondek about her upcoming summer activities. She shared the following information and photo:

“I’ll be premiering the Voice/piano version of Bruce Babcock’s “This Is What I Know: Four Poems of Dorothy Parker” on July 5, 2010 at the Music Teachers’ Association’s Annual Convention at the Los Angeles LAX Marriott. I am also teaching a Vocal Master Class to high school classical singers. I will be
accompanied by Yevgeniy Milyavskiy, UCLA doctoral candidate in Piano, who will perform a short solo recital earlier at the convention.

The following day, I fly to Hawaii’s Big Island for my 4th season teaching and performing at the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival. This year’s festival focuses on French repertoire, and I will be performing operatic excepts from “Les Contes d’Hoffmann” and “Carmen”, as well as songs by Poulenc (arr. by UCLA Composer Jeff Kryka) and cabaret songs popularized by Edith Piaf.

UCLA graduate Voice students Lauren Edwards and Kyrstle Casey will sing the leading roles of “L’Enfant” and “Fire/Princess/Nightingale” (respectively) in Ravel’s “L’Enfant et les Sortileges”, and UCLA Voice
alumna Peabody Southwell will perform the title role in the Peter Brook version of “Carmen.” Both operas will be directed by Opera UCLA’s MFA student director, James Darrah. Whenever not teaching or singing, I’ll be snorkling with the “honu” [green sea turtles]. ”
