Kenny Burrell and “Bye, Bye Birdie”

March 10th, 2008 · 6 Comments

The attached photo from Bye, Bye Birdie, dated c. 1960 was recently spotted by Musicology Chair Raymond Knapp. His sharp eyes identified the guitarist as our very own Ethnomusicology Professor and head of Jazz Studies, Kenny Burrell.

Excellent photo! This is from the 1963 Columbia movie “Bye Bye Birdie” starring Vivien Leigh, Ann Margret and Dick Van Dyke. Whatever happened to the customized gold Fender Jaguar guitar the Conrad Birdie character played?

That’s amazing! I grew up with that movie! I wouldn’t mind knowing where that gold Fender Jaguar is either.

Awesome, just love these old school photos. Who is the guy with the axe?

There is something about the old school black & white photography – agreed ! The charm of a lost time or something else …. but anyway I love it !

Yeah, that Fender would be a huge find! Mr. Burrell is a fantastic player too. “Midnight Blue” is an amazing album.
