PRACTICE ROOMS & LOCKERS

Schoenberg Music Building contains 30 practice rooms available for a fee to students majoring in Music, Ethnomusicology, or Musicology; full-time UCLA students enrolled in an appropriate Music, Ethnomusicology, or Musicology course; and other members of the UCLA community.

How Do I Get A Practice Room Card?
You may apply and pay for a practice room card beginning the first week of school through the second week of Fall Quarter in 1642 Schoenberg.

MFSF Practice Card Fee:
As of Fall 2005, the Music Department will implement the Music Facilities Services Fee (MFSF). The MFSF will be assessed for all voluntary individual and ensemble practice use to help provide needed services for spaces in the Schoenberg Music Building, such as pianos, practice rooms, instrument lockers, and building security. This fee will be implemented via the issuance of practice room use cards. All students who purchase a practice room card will also be issued a locker (while available). The basic fee will be $50.00 per quarter, which will allow unlimited use of any open practice room, at any time during the hours the building is open. For an additional fee, you will have the opportunity to reserve practice room hours between 9:00am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Please review the MFSF reservation chart for fee rates.

MFSF Fee Chart: Beginning Fall Quarter 2005
Basic Card: Unlimited use of any unoccupied practice room at any time (including Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm). Includes locker in Schoenberg Music Building, if available.
$50 per quarter

MFSF Reservations: Please go to http://ww.music.ucla.edu/mfsf to access the online reservation system. For an additional fee, practice rooms may be reserved Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm.
1-5 hours: $30
6-10 hours: $50
11-15 hours: $70
16-20 hours: $90

Room Type: There are three kinds of practice rooms: Blue, Pink, and Yellow. Blue rooms are unlocked, and are generally for use by non-majors enrolled in an appropriate course or other members of the UCLA community. Yellow and Pink rooms are locked, and are only for use by majors who can obtain a key from 1642 Schoenberg. Pink rooms usually house the highest quality pianos. Practice rooms are available throughout the year during posted building hours. Practice rooms are not for eating, drinking, sleeping, or for storing personal items. There is no “holding” of practice rooms—a practice room is always available to anyone except when someone is practicing inside or has made a reservation to use it.

Security: Practice rooms are routinely checked by Community Service Officers (CSOs) to make sure that they are being used properly. Repeated misuse of the practice rooms can result in a suspension of practice room privileges. CSOs are there for the safety and security of the students and the instruments. Please cooperate with their requests and promptly report any damage to instruments or suspicious activity to the CSO on duty.

Practice Room Cards: To use a practice room, students must first apply and pay for a practice room card from Student Services in room 1642. The practice room card must be placed in the window slot on the door when the practice room is in use. Cards found in empty rooms will be confiscated by the CSO guards, and brought to Student Services.

Lost Cards and Keys: Lost Practice Room Cards cost $20 to replace. Lost Practice Room Keys cost $25 to replace.

Practice Room Keys: Students with yellow or pink cards will be given a key to unlock those rooms. The same key, marked B608, unlocks both pink and yellow rooms. Once given a practice room key, a student may keep the key until he or she graduates, withdraws from school, studies abroad, or otherwise leaves the department for an extended period of time. At this time keys must be returned.

LOCKERS

Department Instrument Lockers: Lockers will be provided as available to those who obtain a MFSF practice room card. Lockers, if any are available after all MFSF Cards have been sold, will be rented for $50 per year or any part thereof.

Lockers are issued at the beginning of each academic year in the Fall Quarter. Requests can be made at the same time a student requests a practice room card. The size of the locker assigned depends on the type and size of the student’s primary instrument. The Schoenberg Music Building has 215 lockers of various sizes.

Lockers are used at students’ own risk and neither UCLA nor the Department of Music is liable for any loss, damage or theft to any personal property left in lockers. Users are strongly urged to obtain personal property insurance for instruments of high value.

Sometimes during the year, department notices will be posted asking that students empty or clean out their lockers. Lockers that are not cleaned out as instructed will have their contents removed. There will be a $75 charge to reclaim items removed from lockers by staff.

General Lockers
There are some lockers in the Schoenberg Music Building that are not administered by the Music Department. These are the small and medium book-size lockers with yellow labels under the jurisdiction of the University Department of Recreation. Any student may use these lockers simply by putting a lock on the handle—no formal requests need to be made. However, please read the instructions on the yellow label carefully and please follow them. Piano and voice majors should try to use these lockers, as they are not guaranteed a department instrument locker.
