WINTER 2009

Dear Friends,

Take note of the exciting winter and spring offerings from the UCLA Department of Music. Experience for yourself the new level of excellence at UCLA. As a part of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, the three academic departments now engage in regular concerts and events that blur the line between entertainment and education. Through a curriculum that promotes performance, scholarship, and creativity with a world view, we have become a unique force in music education today.

In February, we have some terrific concerts. Opera UCLA in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," UCLA faculty composers' latest entertainments, the amazing and sparkling UCLA Wind Ensemble, remarkable ensembles in jazz, woodwinds, percussion, and choral singing. The well-oiled and better-than-ever UCLA Philharmonia and its younger cousin the UCLA Symphony Orchestra.

This spring, offerings in a more popular vein will include Mark O'Connor, the UCLA Herb Alpert Artist in Residence, a tribute to Duke Ellington, the Spring Festival of Music and Jazz, and a semi-staged version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel."

The UCLA Chorale and Philharmonia will close the season in a performance of "The Creation" by Joseph Haydn. By then we will all be ready for a summer break.

Please take a look at the concerts that interest you, be sure to put them in your calendar, and I'll see you there.
