Director Timothy Rice

The launch, on May 3, 2010, of a newly designed website marks a milestone in the history of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. The new website creates a visual, online image of the School’s commitment to the teaching of the universe of music and of our desire to create a unity of purpose that serves the educational needs of our three diverse departments.

The School was born by aligning three outstanding but autonomous departments: Ethnomusicology, Music, and Musicology. Each contributes in its unique way to the vision and mission of the School.: excellence in performance, composition, teaching, and scholarship; a commitment to teaching about all the music in the universe; and a commitment to interact with and serve the campus community and the local, national, and international communities beyond the campus.

Creating a sense of unity among these diverse departments has been one of goals since the founding of the School in November of 2007. This website is one step along that path. Its design highlights that unity while representing the uniqueness of each department.

The website is also home to information about our School and its Departments, from the nature of our programs, to how to apply for admission, to the program requirements once you are here, to the events being sponsored by the School, to its history. One of the new features of the site is an events calendar. Each department’s events are listed on its calendar, and these events roll up to a composite list on the School’s calendar, where you can find all the events on offer.

We hope you find the website useful and attractive, and we would love to have your comments and suggestions, as websites are always works in progress.

Please post your suggestions to the blog. We look forward to hearing from you.

We are very happy to announce that we have hired Kathy Nixon as our new Technical Services Manager.

Kathy has worked professionally in arts education for over 25 years. At Cal State, L.A., she managed the operations for all of the music libraries which included selecting, training, and supervising all staff for the library and for music performances. Other experience includes managing box office operations, supervising house management staff, serving on departmental committees for budget, performance policies, fiscal affairs and acquisitions, and recommending modifications in programs and procedures. She also served as event coordinator for the performance organizations and had full responsibility for event planning and tour management.

In her last position, Kathy was Operations Manager for the Plaza del Sol Performance Hall at Cal State, Northridge, a hall that, like ours, was used for both classes and performances. She was responsible for event scheduling and licensee contracting for all events in the Performance Hall, accounting for 300 use days per year. She also developed and implemented policy specific to a State of California Theatrical Venue and developed programs for in-house ticketing and an application procedure to streamline the booking and contracting processes.

Kathy has also been a Communications Specialist for publications and a Human Resource Manager.

Last, but not least, Kathy also loves music and has been involved primarily in choral music. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors, Los Angeles Chapter, American Guild of Organists and editor of the chapter newsletter, LA Pipeline.

Kathy is anxious to meet faculty, staff and students in the music departments, so please stop by the Technical Services office and introduce yourself to her. Her contact information is X63600 and knixon@arts.ucla.edu.
