Admissions Policies and Procedures:
Fall 2010
The Department of Music admits new students in the Fall Quarter only. The filing period for applicants for fall 2010 is November 1st through November 30th, 2009.
You must first apply to the university, by completing the online application available at the University of California admissions web site www.ucop.edu/pathways. Applications submitted after November 30th will be considered late and may not be processed. Music Department supplemental documents, for all applicants who’ve met the November 30th deadline, will be available starting December 1, 2009.
All applicants to the Music major are required to:
1. Meet all academic eligibility requirements for admission to the University of California either as a freshman or transfer student. (See admissions web site www.admissions.ucla.edu)
2.
Audition in person or submit an audition recording (compact disc preferred). Applicants who reside within 200 miles of UCLA are required to audition on campus. All applicants are strongly encouraged to audition in person if at all possible. Specific audition requirements can be obtained upon request from the Student Services Office in the Department of Music or the department web site. Auditions will be held at the UCLA campus on January 30th, February 6th, and February 13th, 2010. The Music Department determines the specific day and time of your audition. An appointment with a specific date and time will be sent to you via email.
3. Applicants planning to audition
on the following instruments, Cello, Clarinet, Flute, French Horn, Piano, Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Voice, Viola, or Violin are required to submit a prescreening audition. Either a compact disc (CD) or digital videodisc (DVD) is acceptable.
Your pre-screening CD or DVD
may be submitted any time after you have completed the admissions application, but must be received by the Student Services office no later than January 8, 2010. Only those applicants selected from the pre-screening evaluation will receive an appointment for a campus audition. You will be notified by e-mail of your selection status. Applicants who indicated Composition as their primary interest must submit
a portfolio with
a minimum of three written scores, due by January 8, 2010. Following a review of all submitted scores, selected students will receive an appointment for an interview/audition with our composition faculty.
4. Applicants interested in the Jazz Studies program should apply to the Ethnomusicology major. The Music Department is no longer offering the Jazz Studies concentration.
The Department of Music undergraduate advisor, Alfred Bradley, is available to meet with prospective students by appointment. Applicants considering transferring to UCLA from another institution are urged to seek advisement early in the application process. For further information, or to schedule an appointment, you should email or call Mr. Bradley at abradley@arts.ucla.edu or by phone at 310-825-4768.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN MUSIC EDUCATION CONCENTRATION AT UCLA
The UCLA Department of Music will be accepting students interested in pursuing a career in Music Education for Fall 2010. The UC application mistakenly included the following information in the part of the application where students select a major:
Education
Not open to entering students. Apply
for one of the other Music
concentrations and see catalog for
details.
This information is in error. To apply for Music Education, simply select your primary instrument as your major. You will then be sent a Department of Music questionnaire on which you can indicate your interest in Music Education as well as information about auditions (as well as prescreening evaluations for some instruments).
We apologize for the confusion. Thank you for your interest in the Music Education Program at UCLA.
