Admissions Polices and Procedures:

Fall 2008

The Department of Music admits new students in the Fall Quarter only. The filing period for applicants for fall 2008 is November 1st through November 30th, 2007.

You may only apply using the on line application web site; www.ucop.edu/pathways. Applications received after November 30th will be considered late and may not be processed. Please contact the UCLA Office of Undergraduate Admissions & Relations with Schools (UARS), Box 951436, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1436 if you are unable to access the application website.

Supplemental documents and pre-screening instructions for all applicants who’ve met the November 30th deadline, will be available starting December 3, 2007.

All applicants to the Music major are required to:

1. Meet all academic eligibility requirements for admission to the University of California either as a freshman or transfer student. (See admissions web site www.admissions.ucla.edu)

2. Audition in person or on Compact Disc (CD). Applicants who reside within 300 miles of UCLA are required to audition on campus. All applicants are strongly encouraged to audition in person if at all possible. Specific audition requirements can be obtained upon request from the Student Services Office in the Department of Music or the UCLA Music Department’s web site. Auditions will be held at the UCLA campus on January 26 th and/or February 2nd . The music department determines the specific day and time of your audition. An appointment with a specific date and time will be sent to you via email.

3. Applicants planning to audition for Violin, Viola, Cello, Piano, or Voice are required to submit a pre-screening audition. Compact discs (CDs) are highly preferred and may be submitted any time after you have completed the admissions application, but must be received no later than January 4, 2008. Only those applicants selected from the pre-screening evaluation will receive an appointment for a campus audition. You will be notified by e-mail of your selection status. Applicants who indicated Composition as their primary interest must submit a minimum of three written scores, due by January 4, 2008. Following a review of all submitted scores, selected students will receive an appointment for an interview/audition with our composition faculty.

4. Applicants interested in the Jazz Studies program should apply to the Ethnomusicology major. The music department is no longer offering the Jazz Studies concentration.

At the conclusion of all auditions, the faculty admissions committee determines which applicants should be recommended for admission. A limited number of music scholarships are available and offered to applicants with the highest audition ranking.

The Department of Music undergraduate advisor, Alfred Bradley, is available to meet with prospective students by appointment. Applicants considering transferring to UCLA from another institution are urged to seek advisement early in the application process. For further information, or to schedule an appointment, you should email us at musicaud@ucla.edu or call Mr. Bradley at 310-825-4768. We strongly recommend you visit our web site, www.music.ucla.edu for updated information regarding deadlines, performances, and other department highlights.
