AUDITION REQUIREMENT

SAXOPHONE

Freshman Performance and Music Education specialists:

All saxophonists entering the saxophone performance program are required to play alto saxophone for individual instruction. However, auditions can be played on alto, tenor, baritone, or soprano saxophone. The repertoire list below are recommended selections for the alto saxophone. Tenor, baritone, and soprano solos will be sent on request. Any other solos chosen not on this list must contain contrasting sections or movements of melodic and technical passages. If a short, slow, lyrical solo is chosen it must be contrasted with another sele ion displaying technical facility. (For example: Aria by Eugene Bozza and Rumba by Maurice Whitney)

TECHNIQUE:

• Scales: major, minor, and chromatic (two or three octaves when applicable)
• Sight reading
• Etudes: Two contrasting(fast-slow) selections from the Ferling Studies or etudes of choice.

REPERTOIRE: (select one solo and perform two movements)

• Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano (1st and 2nd movt.) or (2nd and 3rd movt)- by Lawson Lunde
• Tableaux de Provence (1st ,2nd, and 3rd movt) or (4th and 5th movt.) - by Paule Maurice
• Sonata (1st and 2nd movt) or (1st and 4th movt) - by Henri Eccles

For Transfer Performance Specialists:

TECHNIQUE:

• Scales and Arpeggios: major, minor and chromatic
• Sight reading
• Etudes: Two contrasting (fast-slow) selections from the Ferling Studies or etudes of choice.

REPERTOIRE (select one solo and perform two movements):

• Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano (1st and 2nd movt) or (3rd movt)- Bernhard Heiden
• Improvisation and Caprice - by Bozza
• Scaramouche (1st and 2nd movt) or (2nd and 3rd movt) - by Darius Milhaud

Graduate:

MM AND DMA PROGRAMS

Repertoire: MM and DMA: Your program must include one from the following:

Creston: Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano

Desenclos: Prelude Cadence and Finale

Glazounov: Concerto for Alto Saxophone

Ibert: Concertino da Camera
