AUDITION REQUIREMENT

 

French Horn

 

 

Freshman and Sophomore Applicants:

·        Scales; 3 octaves (major scale) from low Eb concert (low Bb) to high Eb concert (high Bb) and descending; legato and/or staccato at approximately quarter note =100, breathe as necessary.

·        One movement from standard Horn concerto or Sonata literature; piano accompaniment will either be provided or you can provide your own.

·        Orchestral Excerpts: Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony – 2nd  movement solo; Mahler 1st Symphony – opening solo; Richard Strauss, Till Eulenspiegel – opening solo and Brahms Symphony #3 – 3rd movement solo in C Horn, letter B to C.

·        Sight Reading: Selected orchestral excerpt(s) from Pottag Book 1 –F, Eb or D Horn transposition.  Optional: Portion of a slow Etude from Oscar Franz or an Etude from Kopprasch Book 1.

 

Junior or Senior Applicants:

·        Scales; 3 octaves (major scale) from low Eb concert (low Bb) to high Eb concert (high Bb) and descending; legato and/or staccato at approximately quarter note =100, breathe as necessary.

·        One movement from standard Horn concerto or Sonata literature; piano accompaniment will either be provided or you can provide your own.

·        Orchestral Excerpts: Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony – 2nd  movement solo; Richard Strauss, Till Eulenspiegel – opening solo; Brahms Symphony #3 – 3rd movement solo in C Horn, letter B to C; Mahler, Symphony #7 – 2nd movement rehearsal numbers 97 – 98 and rehearsal numbers 108 – 110 and Rachmaninov, Piano Concerto #2 – 1st movement solo (Moderato) from rehearsal #13 to 14.

·        Sight Reading: Selected orchestral excerpt(s) from Pottag Book 1 –F, Eb or D Horn transposition.  Optional: Portion of a slow Etude from Oscar Franz, an Etude from Kopprasch Book 1 or an Etude from Maxime-Alphonse Book 4.

 

MM and DMA Applicants:

·        Movements from three different works from the Horn literature demonstrating different periods and styles.  (Senior and Master’s Recital material are a good start.)  Piano accompaniment is required unless you are playing a work from the standard unaccompanied literature such as the Malcolm Arnold Fantasy, etc.

·        Orchestral Excerpts: Tchaikovsky 5th Symphony – 2nd  movement solo;  Beethoven, Symphony #7 – 1st movement A Horn passage from bar 84 to bar 108; Richard Strauss, Till Eulenspiegel – opening solo; Mahler, Symphony #9 – 1st movement 26 bars after rehearsal #16 (6 bars after Plotzlich beteutend langsamer/Lento Misterioso to Nicht mehr so langsam) to 36 bars after rehearsal #16; Wagner, Gotterdammerung/Siegfried’s Rhine Journey – “Short Call” 8 bars after rehearsal #30 through beat 1 of Allegro and Richard Strauss, Ein Heldenleben – opening solo and/or ending solo from rehearsal #107 to 13 after rehearsal #109.

·        Etudes: One etude from Gunther Schuller, Verne Reynolds or Gallay 40 Preludes #21 – #40.

·        Scales; 3 octaves (major scale) from low Eb concert (low Bb) to high Eb concert (high Bb) and descending; legato and/or staccato at approximately quarter note =100, breathe as necessary.
