AUDITION REQUIREMENT

 

CELLO

 

Applicants who are unable to come for a live audition have the option to submit a videotape.

 

Undergraduate Applicants:

 

I.    Requirements for students specializing in Performance

All selections are to be played from memory

 

TECHNIQUE:

 

 One major and minor, 4 octave scale of your choice

 One major and minor, 4 octave arpeggio of your choice

 Etude:  One from the following: 

            Servais Caprices

            Popper (High School of Cello Playing)

            Piatti Caprices

 

REPRESENTATIVE REPERTOIRE:

 

 A short virtuoso piece or a movement from an advanced sonata.

 One movement from a Bach Suite for cello solo

 One movement of a major concerto

 

 

II.    Requirements for students specializing in Music Education

Applicants may choose to play with or without music.

 

TECHNIQUE:

 

 One major and minor, 3 octave scale of your choice

 One major and minor, 3 octave arpeggio of your choice

 Etude:  One from the following: 

            Duport

   Franchomme

   Popper

            

 

REPRESENTATIVE REPERTOIRE

 

A short piece or sonata movement or a movement of a Concerto

One movement from a Bach suite for cello solo

 

 

 

 

 

Graduate Applicants

  

NOTE: All works, except for sonatas with piano must be presented from memory.

 

Repertoire: MM:

a)   one movement of a standard concerto for cello

b)   two contrasting movements of any suite by Bach

c)    two contrasting movements from a sonata for cello and piano or two contrasting short works from the standard repertoire.

 

Repertoire: DMA: A 50 - 60 minute program, demonstrating your familiarity with a variety of musical styles and periods, including a work written after 1950. A complete concerto should be included.
