WINTER 2010 CONCERT SCHEDULE

UCLA PHILHARMONIA is the flagship orchestra of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. It rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:05 to 5:50 PM and performs nine full programs each year, encompassing a full spectrum of symphonic, operatic and music theater repertoire. Founded in 1936, Philharmonia's music directors have included Lukas Foss, Richard Dufallo, Mehli Mehta, Samuel Krachmalnick, Alexander Treger and Jon Robertson. 2009-2010 marks the fifth season of Philharmonia's dynamic music director and conductor Neal Stulberg.

Philharmonia’s programming focuses on both the core symphonic and operatic repertoire, and the best in contemporary and rarely-performed works. Symphonic highlights since 2005 have included:

• a June 2008 Philharmonia performance at the Getty Center’s Harold Williams Auditorium accompanying a revival of Edward Curtis’ “In the Land of the Head Hunters,” a groundbreaking 1914 silent film with its newly restored original score by John Braham.
• Royce Hall performances of Beethoven Ninth Symphony (2008) and Haydn “Creation” (2009) with the University Chorus and Angeles Chorale
• “One Foot in the Grave,” Philharmonia’s first-ever, fully-costumed Halloween Royce Hall “Spooktacular” (2008)
• Philharmonia’s debut appearance at the Peninsula Music Fair in Rancho Palos Verdes (2008)

Since 2005, Philharmonia has accompanied staged UCLA Opera productions of Verdi “Falstaff,” Britten “Midsummer Night's Dream,” Puccini “Gianni Schicchi” and “Suor Angelica,” Weill “Threepenny Opera,” Mozart “Le Nozze di Figaro” and Rodgers and Hammerstein “Carousel.”

UCLA Philharmonia may be taken for credit and is composed mainly of music majors; qualified non-majors may also audition for violin, string bass, and other positions as needed. General auditions for UCLA Philharmonia are held at the beginning of fall quarter. Violinists, violists and string bassists may also audition for membership in the orchestra at the beginning of winter and spring quarters, by appointment.

Auditions for UCLA Philharmonia and UCLA Symphony will be held September 21-28, 2009.  PLEASE NOTE: ORCHESTRAL EXCERPTS FOR FALL 2009 AUDITIONS HAVE BEEN CHANGED.  Audition lists and required audition excerpts in downloadable PDF format (designated “List C”) are below. Schedules and sign-up procedures will be available on this page starting September 1.

UCLA SYMPHONY
Founded in 2002, UCLA SYMPHONY is UCLA’s campus-wide orchestra, drawing its membership from throughout the university community. It meets Wednesday evenings from 7:15 to 9:45 PM, performs one concert per quarter, and is open to all UCLA undergraduates, graduate/professional school students, faculty, staff and affiliates. Recent repertoire highlights have included:

Concerts are in Schoenberg Hall; conductors include Philharmonia music director Neal Stulberg and selected MM and DMA conducting majors. UCLA Symphony may be taken for credit.
