FALL 2008 CONCERT SCHEDULE

UCLA PHILHARMONIA

UCLA PHILHARMONIA is UCLA's flagship orchestral ensemble. It rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 to 5:50 PM and presents a wide range of performances throughout the year, including symphonic concerts, opera and music theater.
Founded in 1936, Philharmonia's music directors have included Lukas Foss, Richard Dufallo, Mehli Mehta, Samuel Krachmalnick, Alexander Treger and Jon Robertson.  2008-2009 marks the  fourth season of Philharmonia's dynamic music director and conductor Neal Stulberg.

Philharmonia’s programming focuses on the core symphonic and operatic repertoire.  Recent symphonic highlights have included:

In June 2008, Philharmonia was invited to perform at the Getty Center’s Harold Williams Auditorium, accompanying a revival of Edward Curtis’ “In the Land of the Head Hunters,”  a groundbreaking 1914 silent film with its newly restored original score by John Braham.

Since 2005, Philharmonia has accompanied staged UCLA Opera productions of Verdi “Falstaff,” Britten “Midsummer Night's Dream,” Puccini “Gianni Schicchi” and “Suor Angelica” and Weill “Threepenny Opera.”

Highlights for 2008-09 include a December Royce Hall performance of Beethoven Ninth Symphony with the University Chorus and Angeles Chorale, a special Royce Hall Halloween concert, Philharmonia’s debut appearance at the Peninsula Music Fair in Rancho Palos Verdes, the fourth annual “All-Star” concert and a staged production of Mozart “Marriage of Figaro.”

UCLA Philharmonia may be taken for credit and is composed mainly of music majors; qualified non-majors may also audition for violin, string bass, and other positions as needed. General auditions for UCLA Philharmonia are held at the beginning of fall quarter. Violinists, violists and string bassists may also audition for membership in the orchestra at the beginning of winter and spring quarters, by appointment. Detailed audition information, including required orchestral excerpts in downloadable PDF format, will be available on this webpage in mid-July.

PLEASE NOTE: ORCHESTRAL EXCERPTS FOR FALL 2008 AUDITIONS HAVE BEEN CHANGED. New audition lists and PDFs of the required orchestral excerpts for all instruments will be posted here over the next several days. Once these have been posted, follow the link to the appropriate excerpt list for your instrument and major. (Some of the excerpts span more than one page.) Please prepare all bracketed sections of each piece. We expect that all excerpts should be posted by July 28th or 29th.

UCLA SYMPHONY

Founded in 2002, UCLA SYMPHONY draws its membership from throughout the university community. It meets Wednesday evenings from 7:15 to 9:45 PM, performs one concert per quarter, and is open to all UCLA undergraduates, graduate/professional school students, faculty and staff.  Recent repertoire highlights have included:

Concerts are in Schoenberg Hall; conductors include Philharmonia music director Neal Stulberg and selected graduate students. UCLA Symphony may be taken for credit.
