As Resident Stage Director for UCLA Music Department for over thirty years, JOHN HALL has well over 100 productions to his credit. From 17th century operas by Cesti and Scarlatti to contemporary works such as Bernstein’s West Side Story and Candide, his diverse and varied productions have given his students a strong background in stage performance. Alumni of his program are currently performing on Broadway, in national and international touring companies and in opera houses throughout Europe and the U.S.
John is also an accomplished librettist who directed the Carnegie Hall premiere of his cantata Flashpoint/Stonewall (music by Roger Bourland). His song cycles Encountertenor and Thoughts Unspoken (music by Jake Heggie) have been performed in London’s Wigmore Hall, The Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Series and in recital at Covent Garden Opera House.
Additionally, John also teaches popular master classes, including Songfest which he co founded in 1996 with master teachers Martin Katz, Graham Johnson and Rosemary Hyler. Since retiring from UCLA his greatest enjoyment is traveling.
