OUTREACH PERFORMANCE OF BRITTEN'S A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
FEBRUARY 2007

MUSIC OUTREACH MISSION STATEMENT:

The outreach mission of the UCLA Department of Music promotes a lifelong engagement with music through a comprehensive program of cultural activities, community performances, and educational opportunities. At present, our goals are accomplished through two programs: the Maxwell H. Gluck Outreach Program and the UCLA Music Partnership Program.

Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation sponsored programs:

Music Performance Outreach

Since the Fall of 1996, the UCLA Music Outreach Program has been the beneficiary of a generous grant from the Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation. This funding enables us to take our finest musicians to senior centers, schools and other institutions throughout the Southern California community, bringing high quality musical performances and education free of charge to individuals and groups who might otherwise not have the opportunity to hear live classical and jazz music. Throughout the year, we offer a variety of performances featuring piano soloists, duos, trios, vocal quartets, string quartets, jazz combos, and woodwind or brass ensembles. The Gluck Fellows Music Performance represents a unique opportunity to render service to the community while providing gifted UCLA music students with financial aid and a chance to further their musical and professional development.UCLA Music Fellows:

  • receive help to finance their education

  • acquire vital performance experience and practical training in performance organization and management

  • share their musical knowledge through hands-on workshops, master classes and demonstrations at local elementary, middle and high schools

  • enrich their own lives through the invaluable experiences gained by reaching out to others

Music Education OutreachThe Gluck Educational ensemble provides schoolchildren in Los Angeles with a sequential arts-in-education program when music programs may be otherwise limited or absent. The Gluck Education Outreach Program provides weekly two-hour sessions of training for UCLA music students to better prepare them for these educational outreach activities. Each education ensemble gives a minimum of six performances/workshops per year at selected Los Angeles-area schools.Opera Outreach The Opera Outreach program is committed to providing in-depth music and arts experiences for students in Los Angeles-area schools. The program brings a young audience to UCLA’s Schoenberg Hall for an opportunity to experience live opera, often for the first time. Prior to the opera field trip, teachers receive educational packets to help familiarize their students with aspects of the upcoming performance.

We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation, its Board of Directors and Staff:

John Kaswick, M.D./President
Richard Reinis, Esq./Secretary
Leonard Marx, Member Emeritus
Betty Shelhamer, Member
Camilla Kocol, Executive Director
Johanna Zimmerman, Financial Coordinator

UCLA Music Partnership Program

For the past nine years, the UCLA Music Partnership Program has sent UCLA music students into Los Angeles’ most under-served inner-city communities to provide music training and mentoring to talented at-risk youth. UCLA music students teach and inspire over 1500 inner city youths annually at five partnership sites: Washington Preparatory High School, Roosevelt High School, Bret Harte Middle School, Bursch Elementary School, and Boys and Girls Club of Hollywood. While weekly lessons constitute the core of the program, participants also may participate in academic tutoring, college prep activities, and opportunities to attend musical and cultural events throughout Los Angeles.

For further information on these programs or to schedule Gluck performance events, please contact the UCLA Department of Music Outreach Office at (310) 825-8628. Fax: (310) 206-4738. Both the Gluck Outreach Programs and the Music Partnership Program are free to participants, thanks to private philanthropy. Maintaining this service requires a level of support that allows us to undertake all of these important projects while ensuring the program’s continued excellence from year to year. If you are interested in helping increase the success of these programs, please contact the Development Office at (310) 825-2512.
