DEPARTMENT STATEMENT

The UCLA Department of Music is dedicated to producing musicians capable of succeeding in today's highly competitive professional world. We believe that tomorrow's leaders must be more than competent in a particular field; they must be able to think creatively and adapt readily to rapid changes in our uncertain times. To that end we offer a distinguished faculty, individualized instruction, and extensive performance opportunities in one of the most stimulating research environments in the world. With a strong focus on art music traditions of both Europe and the Americas, and enriched by the perspectives of outstanding sister departments in Musicology and Ethnomusicology, UCLA's Music Department offers students unique opportunities across a broad range of contexts. The faculty includes some of the leading soloists of our time, principal musicians from the finest area orchestras (including the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra), first-call studio musicians, and internationally recognized composers, conductors, and scholars.
